The Viking Moot

The next Viking Moot will take place on

31st of July and 1st of August 2010, 10 AM to 5 PM.

The Viking Moot at Moesgård Beach is an annual event, which takes place on the last weekend in July - the weekend closest to July 29, the feast day of St. Olaf. In the Middle Ages and probably in the Viking Age too, this day was a fair day in Århus.

Market stalls

Vikings from far and near meet at the Viking Moot to recreate the festive markets held in the early days of Århus. The market stalls offer a wealth of interesting articles, and craftsmen produce fine items of iron, wood, leather, silver, wool, amber, glass, willow, and many other materials.

Activities for visitors

Visitors can try their skills at different activities. Archery is especially popular, and here children and adults compete for the best result. However, there are activities for every taste, and all age groups can take part.

Fighters and horsemen

The highlights of the Viking Moot are the combating warriors and fierce horsemen, who show their skills on Saturday and Sunday at twelve and three o'clock. The warriors cross swords in formidable battles, incited by a cheering crowd. Horsemen on Icelandic horses ride in procession, and the most daring plunge into wild rides.

Catering

Naturally, there are also many goodies to taste at the market, and the pleasant smells of meals cooked over open fires tempt the visitors to become aquainted with the Viking cuisine.

Organizer

The Viking Moot is organized by Moesgård Museum in co-operation with representatives of horsemen, warriors and tradesmen. The event took place for the first time in 1977 and is the oldest and biggest Viking market in Scandinavia.

Find your way to the Viking Moot

The Viking Moot takes place at Moesgård Beach at the mouth of the Giber River some 6 miles south of Århus. There is a parking area at the beach where you also find the terminus of bus-route 19.

The beautiful "Prehistoric Trackway" leads you from Moesgård Museum somewhat over a mile to the beach. Take bus-route 6 to the museum.
